A football goal is 2.44m (8ft) high, a basketball hoop and a netball post are both 3.05m (10ft), a men’s volleyball net is 2.43m (7ft 11.7in), and a tennis net is 1.07m (3ft 6in) at the posts. Cricket stumps are just 71.12cm (28in). Most goals and hoops stand between 1.2 and 1.7 times the height of an average UK man (1.78m).
Sports equipment heights, ranked
Heights are from each sport’s governing body or a national sports-dimensions guide. The last column divides by the height of an average UK man, 178.21cm, to show how the equipment compares with a person. Lower values mean the equipment is shorter than an adult.
| Equipment | Height | In feet and inches | Times a UK man |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basketball hoop (FIBA) | 3.05m | 10ft | 1.71 |
| Netball goal post | 3.05m | 10ft | 1.71 |
| Rugby union crossbar | 3.0m | 9ft 10in | 1.68 |
| Football goal (crossbar) | 2.44m | 8ft | 1.37 |
| Volleyball net, men | 2.43m | 7ft 11.7in | 1.36 |
| Volleyball net, women | 2.24m | 7ft 4.2in | 1.26 |
| Hockey goal | 2.14m | 7ft 0.3in | 1.20 |
| Badminton net, at the posts | 1.55m | 5ft 1in | 0.87 |
| Badminton net, at the centre | 1.524m | 5ft | 0.86 |
| Tennis net, at the posts | 1.07m | 3ft 6in | 0.60 |
| Tennis net, at the centre | 0.914m | 3ft | 0.51 |
| Cricket stumps | 71.12cm | 28in | 0.40 |
Goal widths and other dimensions
Height is only part of the shape. A football goal is 7.32m wide inside the posts (24ft, or 8 yards), which is 3 times as wide as it is high. A hockey goal is 3.66m wide, and a rugby union goal is 5.6m wide between the posts. Cricket stumps are 22.86cm (9in) wide in total.
Sports also use very different court lengths. A cricket pitch is 20.12m (22 yards) between the wickets, and a tennis court is 23.77m long. For the sizes of living things against these lengths, see biggest dinosaurs compared to a human.
How does the equipment compare with player heights?
The numbers explain why height matters differently across sports. A basketball hoop at 3.05m is well above head height for nearly everyone. Our article on average NBA player height by position shows how tall elite players are.
A football goal at 2.44m is about 66cm above an average UK man’s head. A men’s volleyball net at 2.43m is nearly the same height as a football crossbar, so players must jump to attack over it.
| Name | Height |
|---|---|
| UK average woman | 163.9 cm |
| UK average man | 178.2 cm |
| Basketball hoop (3.05m) | 305 cm |
Why are men’s and women’s nets different?
In volleyball, the men’s net is 2.43m and the women’s 2.24m, a difference of 19cm (7.5 inches). The rule sets the heights; this page does not speculate about the reasons. In football, basketball and tennis, the standard heights above are the same for men and women.
Junior sport often uses smaller equipment. One example in the sources is the “Netta” modified netball game for 8 to 10 year olds, where the posts are 2.4m rather than 3.05m. If you coach or play at youth level, check your governing body for the junior dimensions.
How the heights are measured
A football goal is measured from the ground to the lower edge of the crossbar, so the clear opening is exactly 2.44m. Tennis nets are lower in the centre than at the posts because the cord sags, so a strap pulls it down to 0.914m. Badminton nets work the same way, at 1.55m at the posts and 1.524m in the middle. Cricket stumps are measured from the playing surface to the top of the stump, and the bails sit on top, adding up to 1.27cm.
The full-size football goal is 2.44m by 7.32m. You can use the height converter to switch between metres and feet. To see how a goal compares with a specific person, use the height difference calculator.
Method and sources
The football goal figures are from IFAB Law 1 and are repeated by Laws of Sports. The basketball basket height (3.05m) and tennis net centre height (0.914m) are from Laws of Sports; the tennis post height (1.07m) is from the ITF Rules of Tennis 2026. Cricket stump height, width and bail projection are from Law 8 of the MCC Laws of Cricket. Volleyball (2.43m and 2.24m), badminton (1.55m and 1.524m), netball (3.05m, Netta 2.4m), hockey (2.14m by 3.66m) and rugby union (3.0m crossbar, 5.6m wide) come from the Government of Western Australia sports dimensions guide. The cricket pitch (20.12m) and tennis court (23.77m) lengths are from Laws of Sports. The UK average man (178.21cm) is from this site’s dataset, compiled from NCD-RisC. Feet and inches are converted at 2.54cm per inch. Last reviewed 25 October 2026.
