Big cats are smaller at the shoulder than most people expect. A tiger stands 80 to 110cm (2ft 7in to 3ft 7in), a cheetah 67 to 94cm and a male leopard 60 to 70cm, so even a large tiger reaches only about 62% of an average UK man at 178.21cm.

Big cat shoulder heights compared

Heights are at the shoulder, as stated on each species’ Wikipedia page. The last column divides the top of each range by the UK average man’s height of 178.21cm.

Cat Shoulder height Top of range as a share of UK average man
Snow leopard about 56cm (22in) 31%
Leopard (male) 60 to 70cm (24 to 28in) 39%
Leopard (female) 57 to 64cm (22 to 25in) 36%
Jaguar 57 to 81cm (22.4 to 31.9in) 45%
Cougar 60 to 90cm (24 to 35in) 51%
Cheetah 67 to 94cm (2.2 to 3.1ft) 53%
Tiger 80 to 110cm (2ft 7in to 3ft 7in) 62%
Smilodon fatalis (extinct) about 100cm (39in) 56%
Smilodon populator (extinct) about 120cm (47in) 67%

The snow leopard figure is a single stated value, not a range. Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number.

Why shoulder height understates how big a tiger feels

Shoulder height is a low number for a cat that is long and heavy. A tiger’s head-and-body length is 1.4 to 2.8m, with a tail adding 0.6 to 1.1m. Wikipedia gives Bengal tiger males at 200 to 260kg and females at 100 to 160kg, so a tiger is far heavier than a person of similar height.

The lion shows the same effect. The page gives male head-and-body length as 184 to 208cm and weight as 186.55 to 225kg in southern Africa, but gives no shoulder height. For that reason lions are not in the table above, rather than guessing a figure.

Cheetahs, leopards and jaguars

The cheetah is the tallest at the shoulder of the three, at 67 to 94cm, but the lightest, at 21 to 65kg.

The leopard is shorter, with males at 60 to 70cm and 30.9 to 72kg. The jaguar stands 57 to 81cm but weighs 56 to 96kg, and exceptionally large males reach 158kg. Of the three, the jaguar is the heaviest for its height.

How big was Smilodon?

Smilodon, the sabre-toothed cat, was about as tall as a large tiger but much more heavily built. Smilodon fatalis reached about 100cm at the shoulder and 160 to 280kg. The largest species, Smilodon populator, stood about 120cm and typically weighed 220 to over 400kg, with one estimate of up to 470kg. Its upper canines reached about 28cm.

That makes the biggest Smilodon about two-thirds the height of the average man at the shoulder, but several times the weight of a leopard. For other Ice Age animals see Ice Age giants compared with a human.

Where do other animals fit?

For domestic comparisons, see dog sizes compared by breed: a large wolfhound is about as tall at the shoulder as a tiger at the low end of its range. Taller still are the animals in how tall an elephant is compared with a human.

Method and sources

Heights are as stated on the species’ Wikipedia pages, read on 29 October 2026. Where a page gives no shoulder height (the lion), none is shown. Midpoints on the board are simple averages of the stated range ends. The UK average man (178.21cm) comes from this site’s dataset, compiled from NCD-RisC. Percentages are simple division and rounded. Inches convert at 2.54cm. Last reviewed 29 October 2026.
