Method and sources
For each country we take your height minus that country's mean adult height for the chosen sex (NCD-RisC 2019, age 19). A gap of 1 cm or less counts as the same, and the strongest colour is a gap of 15 cm or more. The map covers the 69 countries in our dataset, which is a subset of the roughly 200 in the full NCD-RisC release.
Country outlines are from Natural Earth (public domain) via the world-atlas dataset. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. For a single country in more detail, use the average height by country calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What does the colour of each country mean?
Each country is coloured by the gap between your height and that country's average adult height for the sex you pick. Green shades mean you are taller than the average, orange shades mean you are shorter, and the darker the shade the bigger the gap (the strongest colour is a gap of 15 cm or more). Grey means we do not have data for that country yet.
Why are some countries grey?
The map covers the 69 countries in our current dataset, which is a starter set of the most searched countries rather than the full NCD-RisC list of around 200. We are adding more over time. Grey does not mean the average there is unknown to science, only that it is not on this page yet.
Where does the data come from?
Average adult height by country comes from the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC), the standard reference for global height trends. We use the 2019 estimates of mean height at age 19. See the sources page for the full note on how our figures were compiled.
Is this the height of people today?
It is the average height of people who were 19 in 2019, which is a good guide to the adults of a country but not a measurement of every age group. Older generations are generally shorter in countries where nutrition and healthcare have improved over the last century.
Why does it ask whether to compare with men or women?
Men are taller than women on average in every country, so comparing a woman with the average man would make almost every country look taller than her. Choosing the matching average gives a fairer picture of where you stand.
Does a country average say anything about me?
No. Averages describe populations, and individual heights vary a lot within every country. This map is for curiosity and context, not a judgement about your height or your health.
