A giraffe stands far taller than any person. Adult male giraffes (bulls) can exceed 5.5 metres (18ft), and adult females (cows) reach about 4.5 metres (15ft), measured ground to the top of the head. Against an average UK adult man at 1.78m, that’s roughly three times a person’s height.
Giraffe height vs human height, at a glance
The table below sets Britannica’s giraffe figures against this site’s UK average adult heights, plus two real built reference objects from the comparison board’s own asset library.
| Subject | Height | vs UK average man (1.78m) |
|---|---|---|
| Bull giraffe (adult male) | 5.5m+ (18ft+) | about 3.1x taller |
| Cow giraffe (adult female) | ~4.5m (15ft) | about 2.5x taller |
| UK average man | 1.78m (5’10”) | — |
| UK average woman | 1.64m (5’4.6”) | — |
| Double-decker bus | 4.39m | 2.5x taller |
| School bus | 2.8m | 1.6x taller |
A bull giraffe’s 5.5m+ clears a double-decker bus’s 4.39m roof with room to spare. Even a cow giraffe, at roughly 4.5m, stands a little taller than the bus. Set against a school bus (2.8m), a bull giraffe works out to almost exactly double the bus’s height.
The giraffe on the board
The comparison board has a giraffe silhouette, drawn below at 5.5m next to a UK average man and a double-decker bus (4.39m). The silhouette is scaled so that the whole outline, from hoof to the top of the head, is the height you give it, which is exactly how giraffe height is measured, so the picture matches the figure.
| Name | Height |
|---|---|
| Average UK man | 178.2 cm |
| School bus | 280 cm |
| Double-decker bus | 439 cm |
| Bull giraffe (5.5m) | 550 cm |
How a giraffe gets so tall
A giraffe’s height comes mostly from its legs and neck rather than an unusually long body. Both are dramatically elongated compared with almost any other land animal, which is what pushes the total ground-to-head figure so far past a human’s.
That long neck famously contains the same number of vertebrae as a human neck: seven. Each one is simply far longer than ours, rather than there being extra bones stacked up. The legs work the same way, extending the animal’s overall stride and reach as well as its standing height.
This body plan is generally explained as an adaptation for reaching foliage — particularly acacia leaves — well above the browsing height of most competing herbivores, alongside giving a useful vantage point for spotting predators across open savannah.
Bulls vs cows: why the sexes differ
Adult male giraffes (bulls) are consistently taller and heavier than adult females (cows). Britannica’s figures put bulls at over 5.5m against roughly 4.5m for cows, a gap of a full metre or more at the extremes.
This kind of size difference between sexes is common in large mammals and is generally linked to male competition for mates. Taller, heavier bulls tend to have an advantage in the head-to-head “necking” contests male giraffes use to establish dominance, which rewards greater height and neck strength over generations.
Newborn giraffe calves already stand around 1.8m at birth — roughly the height of an adult human — and grow rapidly from there over their first few years.
Picturing three storeys of animal
A useful mental shortcut: stack an average UK adult man (1.78m) on himself roughly three times, and you’re close to a bull giraffe’s height. Two average men stacked would only reach about 3.56m — still short of even a cow giraffe.
Against buildings, a giraffe’s head-height roughly matches a low two-storey structure, where each domestic storey is commonly reckoned at around 2.4-3m including the floor. That’s a rough visual anchor, not a precise architectural claim, but it helps convey just how far above head height a giraffe’s crown sits.
It’s also worth noting that a giraffe’s height is measured to the top of the head, the same convention this site uses for human height. That keeps the comparison consistent rather than mixing height-to-shoulder or height-to-horn figures from other sources.
Method and sources
Giraffe height figures — bulls exceeding 5.5m (18ft), cows around 4.5m (15ft) — come from Encyclopaedia Britannica’s “How Tall Are Giraffes?” article, cited above. Both are ground-to-top-of-head total height, matching how this site measures human height.
UK average adult heights (1.78m for men, 1.64m for women) come from this site’s own country dataset, itself compiled from NCD-RisC’s 2019 cohort figures, already used elsewhere across this site. Double-decker bus (4.39m) and school bus (2.8m) heights come from this site’s own built asset library (src/data/assets.json), sourced there from a London New Routemaster bus specification and a commonly cited US school-bus height range respectively.
All ratios above (giraffe-to-human, giraffe-to-bus) are simple division from these sourced figures, not separately published statistics. Last reviewed 2026-09-19.
